The India Policy Foundation (IPF) has organised a seminar on October 30, 2015 about a ‘Quest for Commonalities -- Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia’ in which similarities have been drawn between both these leaders. Speakers have talked about how even socialist movement did not follow the philosophy of Lohiaji ultimately harming it.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Ashok Modak, National Research Professor, Union HRD Ministry, also talked about Principal of Immediacy’. In this theory result or benefit for the good of maximum was advocated by Deendayalji and Lohiaji while in communist it was not practical and different. It was like offering someone to suffer death in view of a better tomorrow. These were the points where both the leaders were on the same page.

Prof Ashok Modak said that both leaders were appreciative of the country for them love for nation was supreme. For them India was not a simple land but a geo-cultural territory. This land talks about unity and integrity. There were organisations like Himalay Bachao Sangathan and Ramayan Mela organised by Lohiaji.

But for the contradiction in policy and policy paralysis first Prime minister of the country cannot be spared for his role. Prof. Modak said that due to Tibet, Nepal and Kashmir policy of India under Nehru, the country is at receiving end as due to these policy the country is cut off from the Central Asian nation that are culturally similar to India. They are trying to look for their history earlier than Islam. Both Lohiaji and Deendayalji were on the same page.

All these have impact on development, growth and international relations. Lohia was of the opinion that capitalism and Imperialism are twins as they emerge together because to help labourer of Britain they exploited India and similarly other Asian nations by other imperial forces.

Moreover, in this form of socialism the only difference was made that just proprietary changes and instead of industrialists the government became owner of the company. There is also a need to understand that small scale machines have less gestation period. In big industries where big machines are in operation even humans become mechanical. In capitalism labours are alienated from humans. Both Lohia and Deendayal Upadhyaya talked about alienation and estrangement and both of them talked about production at small scale.

Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya talked about vyashti, Samashti and Shristi which is profit, people and planet. Speaking on the occasion Chair on the occasion Prof. Avanijesh Awasthi said that Deendayalji and Lohiaji are like Tulsi and Kabir one of them said everything without criticising while the other did not leave any chance where criticism was required.
It was also discussed that despite all good things about socialist movement of Lohia, why it failed. Speakers were of the opinion that they failed to understand psyche and character of the country. The wrong interpretation of secularism has been one of the reasons for its demise.
